What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgery to removed our body unwanted fat deposit by using suction method.

Is liposuction permanent?

Yes, liposuction is permanent. The amount of  fat cells couldn't increase after the suction, but the remaining fat cells could slightly enlarged. Usually if you gain weight, the fat deposit will go to your unsuctioned area.

Can liposuction reduced weight ?

The main indication in liposuction is to get a better body shape or contour, not for weight reduction. Sometimes your body weight slightly increased after the liposuction, it caused by decreased in body fat, but increase in muscle tissue . The body weight significantly reduced in "mega liposuction" (large volume lipo treatment for very obese person) or in "serial liposuction".

Who need liposuction?

If you have body fat, which could not reduced by exercise or dieting, you need a liposuction.

Is liposuction a risky procedure?

Every surgical procedures have risk : bleeding and infection. Both could be prevented by doing liposuction in a strict sterile procedure  and do the presurgery blood check. Local tumescent anaesthesia greatly reduced the complications. This anaesthesia was develop by Dr Klein (USA dermatologist), who revolutioned the liposuction anaesthesia technique. Now tumescent liposuction is one of the most safe cosmetic surgical procedures .To reduce the  liposuction risk procedures, you need a less aggresive approach and good surgeon, ask him/her about his/her training, how many years they do liposuction , how many cases they did and the complications they had.  Since Dr Klein's invention (1987) of using TUMESCENT LOCAL ANESTHESIA for liposuction, there is NO fatality from this procedure (using tumescent local anesthesia) , all over the world. (now 2013). So this is a very SAFE procedures.

Who do the liposuction?

Liposuction  done by several medical speciality such as cosmetic surgeon, dermatologic surgeon, plastic surgeon, head and neck surgeon, etc. The surgeon should be trained in liposuction. Not all surgeons do liposuction, you should find them and ask them: where they trained,  how many procedures they had,  complications they got,  and better if you could talk with one of their patient, and get better impression from the patient's point of view. Be careful, you should choose a right doctor.

Where the liposuction done?

Liposuction should be done in Operating Theatre Hospital or Clinic. Usually for tumescent anaesthesia, the doctor may give you sedations or pain killer orally or by injection. If you get local anaesthesia, you STILL AWAKE.during the procedures.

Which body parts could be suctioned?

Almost all  body parts could liposuctioned. For example chin, cheek, upper arms, chest , tummy, thigh, saddlebag, back, love handle, and legs  In women the most frequent area for liposuction are: tummy, waist, upper arms, saddlebag, inner thighs, and back. In men the most common area are: love handle, chin, tummy and chest.

What the doctor do when surgery?

First the doctor mark the skin with pen, and then planned the incision site for the cannules insertion, and  give  small amount of local anaesthesia injection in the opening. After washed the skin with antiseptic solition ( e.g. Betadine) and put sterile drapes, the skin incised 3-4 mm to insert the anaestehsia needle and distributed the tumescent solution. After wait for 15-20 minutes , the liposuction done from the same incision site, until desired contour achieved. So the skin incision is very small (3-4 mm) in several area.

What is the possible complications?
The most possible complications are  iregularities, usually this happened because the surgeons didn't work well or the skin heal not uniformerly. This can be corrected 2-3 months later. The  other complication is infection, which 100% could be prevented. Other complication is death, very very seldom, NEVER HAPPENED IN TUMESCENT LOCAL ANESTHESIA LIPOSUCTION.   To make the liposuction very safe, don't do too much in one setting, better to do several times and safe after 1-2 months interval. Death also occurred  when liposuction was combine with other surgery, but this also very, very rare.

 INSTRUCTION FOR PATIENT   (after medical consultation)

BEFORE THE SURGERY
1.Do the blood test several days before: Haemoglobin,Leucosit,Diff.count, ESR (LED), Hematocrite, Bleeding Time, Clotting Time,Trombosite, VDRL/TPHA/HbsAg/anti-HIV, sGOT,sGPT and routine urine test

2 Plan the transportation carefully, so you didn’t get stuck on the trafic.

3.Don’t take any unapproved medicine by your surgeon several days before.

THE DAY

1.You can take light breakfast (if your liposuction by local anaesthesia), use easy to wear shirt.

2.Bring another panties /bra or brief.

3.You should take a shower at home, put off all the accessories: necklace, ear-ring, contact lenses,ect.

4.Don’t come late to the clinic.

AFTER THE SURGERY

1.The first day you should take a rest at home, can do normal activities .

2.You should take more mineral water (2 liters within 6 hours) and take all the medicine the doctor give you (antibiotic and pain killer)

3.Sometime anesthetic liquid  come out from the liposuction opening.This is normal,just put a regular sanitary napkin outside the dressing.This will stop after 6-8 hours.

4.On the area: don’t take a bath or shower,otherwise there  is a risk of infection from the opening sites.

5.Back to the clinic one day after the surgery., then 1 week after surgery: the doctor will put off the stitches,and you can take a shower afterward

6.For the first 2 weeks don’t exercise,otherwise the bruising will increase

7.After the 10^th day, the skin become hardened and uneven, please do a light pressure/massage on the skin, other option is RF massage (indiba) .
